Sleep Apnea

Restoring your sleep

Diagnosis and treatment

Sleep Apnea is a disease which causes a person to experience interrupted breathing patterns in their sleep. Approximately 26% of adults aged 30 to 70 have obstructive sleep apnea and suffer from this condition. Signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness, lack of energy and drive, irregular breathing during sleep, snoring, choking/gasping for air during sleep, frequent nighttime urination, depression and anxiety. And the long term effects include:  high blood pressure, heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Acid Reflux/GERD, weakened immune system, low O2 saturation, and links to earlier onset of Azlheimer’s Disease/Dementia.

The treatment for Sleep Apnea begins with diagnosis. After visiting us at Olympia Advanced Dentistry a patient can take a home sleep test which will record their breathing patterns, oxygen levels and brain waves as they sleep. Once we receive the device we send off the recordings to a certified sleep doctor that will analyze the results and provide a report based on the data. If the patient’s condition is mild to moderate – we can begin treating their sleep apnea with a dental device which is worn nightly. Those with more severe sleep apnea will receive a referral to a local specialist who can provide advanced treatment, such as CPAP therapy.
